James Owen Gish

Jim grew up very poor on a small farm in Kentucky. He is a beloved teacher, counselor, and friend to many in his adopted hometown in Ohio where he has lived since 1970.

Come, come, whoever you are. Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving. It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair. Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times. Come, yet again. Come, come.

~13th-century poet, Rumi

The fires of suffering become the light of consciousness.

~Eckhart Tolle

Jim brings decades experience as a high school counselor and psychology professor to his work. He is a writer and thinker who journeys with his fellow travelers toward wholeness and love. Those with whom he works note that he is deeply empathetic and kind, offering support and guidance without judgement.

Jim is glad to work with a wide range of adults (18+), but is particularly suited to focus on people over 50, retirement issues, men’s issue and masculinity, addiction issues, and depression & anxiety. Jim grew up in the Southern Baptist Church, which he left as a young adult, and he has been searching ever since. He is ordained in the Universal Life Church, a non-denominational organization open to all. He is adept at supporting people as they seek a spiritual or religious identity that makes sense to them and allows them to have peace and joy in their life.

When Jim is not counseling, he teaches courses in psychology and sociology, writes novels and short stories, and runs two miles a day. He has been widely published in literary journals and magazines. His writing has been praised for “the insight into the soul” and for exploring the “tragedy which gives way to the light.” Jim lives on a farm in Arcanum, Ohio with his beloved partner Teri, and their two cats, Buttons and Annabelle.
